Bring a Sponsorship Idea to Get the
Potential Sponsor’s Attention
Which brings up the next point. When you
approach a new prospect, do you take a passive or an active role in the
discussion? Here’s what I mean:
A passive role asks a closed question such
as: “Does your company get involved in sponsorship?” The answer is most likely,
“We are not interested.” Or “We’ve spent all our marketing dollars this year.”
Click.
An active role brings a fresh idea or a new
perspective to their marketing efforts. Before you call a prospect, study the
company, what they do and what they do to promote their products, logos and
brands and bring them a fresh perspective – a new idea about how you can promote
their products or services. Tell them you’d like a chance to talk to them about
your idea. Make it something fresh that you can use to get their attention.
Let’s look at some examples of what I mean.
Executive Outsource Agency
(They could gain more national
awareness of their services – possibly through hospitality for potential clients
at the track)
Mortgage or Loan Company
(Could sport 800 # on the car for
mortgage or loan application call ins)
Motorized Wheel Chair and/or Scooter Manufacturer
(Could race a wheel chair as UPS
races the package car – or promote to older fans that still want to go to the
track)
Online Prescription Company
(Could benefit from more exposure
using a veteran race car driver)
Emerging Home Builder
(Could put them on the map in their
industry and leverage sponsorship into television and magazine advertising)
Mobile Phone or Satellite Phone Company
(A perfect fit for a primary
sponsorship – speed and connection – talk to me during “Gentlemen, Start Your
Engines”)
Software company that uses race cars or a hosting provider
that offers speedy servers to clients
(Employee morale and personal
satisfaction of being involved with beautiful cars)
Companies providing fast deliver such as transportation
companies or Pizza Delivery – or online shopping companies
(The ole Dominos Pizza 30 minute
delivery concept)
Corporate Portfolio Manager
(An opportunity to meet some of the
richest men in the world at huge motorsports or sporting events)
Internet Services, Domain Hosting Web Design
(Appeal to high tech nature of race
cars)
DSL Services Company competing with the local phone company
(Another great name on a race car or
sign that will help entering new markets)
Retail Shoe Company – National
(Can develop a new walking shoe and
drive hits and orders on the website from weary fans at the track)
Financial Services Company
(Promote family wealth building
services that will get them noticed by millions on national television)
National Retailer
(Cooperative marketing opportunity –
they can spend their own money (promotional money already set aside) and promote
their clients – their clients buy more from them)
These are from just thinking out loud. You can probably come
up with even better ideas if you put your mind to it. One of them just might
give you an edge against the guy who doesn’t read my newsletter.
