Domain Name Registration Is More Than Just Registering Your Domain Name
It's an Important Business Consideration.
Even if your company does not have a web site, you could be in jeopardy. At some point, you may want to develop a web site and it is important to move quickly about a domain name to avoid disappointment later. The fact is, someone could select your preferred domain name before you select it. It may have already happened.
In addition, you will be competing for your domain name with companies around the world. For example, your company preferred domain name may be taken by a company in the U.K. or even Australia. To explain what we mean, let's try to understand what a domain name is and why it is important.
One of the first decisions you need to make before creating a web site is choosing a domain name. This name will be a key component of your web site address and of your marketing plan. Commercial companies have a domain name that ends in ".com" (pronounced dot.com). Educational institutions have a domain name that ends in ".edu." There are other international and country level codes used by organizations that want to do business internationally. These companies tend to use country-specific domain names. See the table below for examples.
| International Domains | Sample Country Domains | ||
| Name | Description | Name | Description |
| .com | Commercial companies | .au | Australia |
| .edu | Educational Institutions | .ca | Canada |
| .gov | Government | .de | Germany |
| .net | Network Organizations | .fr | France |
| .org | Non-profit Organizations | .it | Italy |
| .mil | Military | .jp | Japan |
| .us | United States | .uk | United Kingdom |
Even if you do get the name you want for your web site, several companies will probably register country specific names such as "yourcompany.ca" for Canada and "yourcompany.uk" for the United Kingdom. One solution to this problem is to register several country-specific domains in addition to the international domains. It is important to select every possible domain name that your company might want to use in the future, even some names that you may never use....just to protect them, to keep other companies from using them and benefiting from your company's name recognition. This will reduce the likelihood of confusion between your company and other companies.
You may also want to register specific brand names that you own. There may also be names that are used to refer to your products to which you do not own the trademark. It would make sense to register these names as well. Also consider the registration of "generic" names that might be available. For instance, if you sell flowers, and if the name "flowers.com" is available, you may want to register that name. This approach may give you an edge over other companies offering similar products. These names also offer you the ability to create more brand awareness for your company on the net.
Using the order form below, you can direct New Century Marketing Concepts to research the availability of the domain names you may want to protect. These charges will protect each name for a period of two years, after which your company is free to discontinue ownership of the name or renew ownership for a small fee to the registration body.
